Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions toward the use of Zoom application to reduce their English speaking anxiety. Utilizing a quantitative survey method, 20 participants from the English Department at a private University PGRI Jombang, Indonesia, provided insights through questionnaires used negative statements. The findings reveal a nuanced relationship between Zoom and speaking anxiety. While 47% of participants expressed positive responses, agreeing that Zoom can't significant reduced anxiety in various scenarios, specific challenges emerged. Anxiety during topic delivery, embarrassment in volunteering responses, and a perception that other students excel in speaking through Zoom were notable concerns. The study emphasizes the complexity of the platform's influence on anxiety and the need for tailored interventions. Implications for teaching include addressing specific challenges in spontaneous speaking situations and self-comparisons. Future study should delve into factors influencing individual responses to online speaking tasks. This study contributes to a nuanced understanding of the dynamics between Zoom and language anxiety, informing educators on effective strategies for anxiety reduction.
